The more discs, the more noise. The relationship of discs to performance is not quite the same, however. In my experience, using more discs tends to improve the top end but decrease torque. The trick, or art, is to find the number of discs that produces the power characteristics best suited to your normal type of riding.
Any free-flowing exhaust should improve the Savage's top end significantly. For a number of months, I used a baffled dragpipe from Raask in Sweden. It had a good sound, gave me a great top end, and looked much better than the SuperTrapp, but because I do a lot of two-up riding in the city, I decided to put the SuperTrapp back on so I could tune it for more torque. (I might decide to offer the Raask pipe for sale in the future.)
This afternoon, I repacked the SuperTrapp with fiberglass and installed a White Bros. "Snuff-R-Not" end cap. The cap has two ports that can be either open or closed: when they're open, your pipe is just about a straight open pipe. The cap's port closure isn't as snug as it could be, so there may be some leakage. So far the torque is good with the ports closed and five discs in the 'Trapp, but I may try reducing the number of discs to four. With this new end cap, I should be able to open the ports a bit if I need more top end, maybe for travel on the "beltway" around the city.
I ran the SuperTrapp for a long time without any carb mods, but when I installed the Raask I had the spacer removed and the mixture changed by the cycle shop. Later, I experimented with the mixture myself; I think it's probably off the mark now. Working on that will be my next project -- that and replacing the little rubber grommets that the SuperTrapp ate.
